Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team opened its 2015 Gulf South Conference (GSC) schedule with a 2-0 loss to the 10th-ranked Christian Brothers University (CBU) Buccaneers on Friday night at Signaigo Field.
The Buccaneers (8-0, 1-0 GSC) broke on top in the 16th minute when Samuel Wilson scored his seventh goal of the year via an assist by Devon Jackson. In the 42nd minute, Neil Cummings of CBU fed a pass into Xavi Lao who connected for a goal to put the Badgers in a 2-0 deficit going into the intermission with a final score that would also hold through the second 45 minutes of play.
SHC junior goalkeeper
Will Carpenter (2-4) of Spanish Fort, Ala., earned three saves off 17 shots and five corner kicks by CBU while his Buccaneer counterpart Britton McGuire made a single save versus eight shots and one kick from the angles on the other end of the field.
"We could have started the game better tonight," SHC head coach
Steve Wieczorek said following the contest. "They pressed us hard right from the start and created chances straight away. You can't spot the No. 10 team in the country two goals and expect to win.
"On the good side, we played significantly better in the second half," Wieczorek continued. "We created more chances for our offense and held them on defense. Overall though, CBU is the deserved winner tonight."
The Badgers (2-4, 0-1 GSC) will next visit Jackson, Tenn., on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. for a conference contest at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex versus the Union University Bulldogs (3-4, 1-0 GSC).
