Box Score 3 ALBANY, Ga. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) volleyball team collected three more conference victories on Thursday as they opened play in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Division Crossover Tournament hosted by Albany State University (ASU) with 3-0 wins over Paine, Fort Valley and Clark Atlanta.
In the opener versus the Paine College Lions (4-3, 0-1 SIAC), SHC held the opposition to a .106 attack percentage (21-12-85) as junior
Madison Seuzeneau ripped out 11 kills for the Badgers and senior setter
Mallory Raulerson passed around 30 assists in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-18) win.
Spring Hill served up eight aces while sophomore libero
Julie Vujnovich scooped up 14 receptions and six of the 28 Badger digs. Freshman
Dorina Klinger made all three SHC blocks at the net to continue her excellent first year at the collegiate level. As a team, Spring Hill built an even .250 (44-18-104) attack percentage in the match.
"We played well in spurts against Paine," SHC head coach
Peggy Martin said. "But we need to be more consistent in all aspects of the game. Sophomore
Katelyn Bobinger [eight kills, two aces and three digs] provided the spark for us with a really good match on both the front and back rows."
Against the Fort Valley State University Wildcats (1-3, 0-3 SIAC), junior outside hitter
Molly Griffin pounded down 11 kills and Raulerson distributed another 29 assists with two aces as SHC took a 3-0 (25-6, 25-10, 25-5) victory. The Badgers earned a .386 (34-7-70) attack percentage with an incredible 19 services aces highlighted by Griffin's seven single-play efforts.
On defense, Vujnovich gathered 12 digs and senior
Abby Allard grabbed another 10 digs as SHC had 36 in total. Klinger had three of five total blocks by the Badgers.
"FVSU was literally a team effort," said Martin. "We were able to give our starters some much needed rest and our production did not drop off. Everybody played and played well. Three matches in one day and six on the weekend definitely is a rigorous challenge. Our depth 1- through-14 really helped today."
In the nightcap versus the Clark Atlanta University (CAU) Panthers (2-3, 1-1 SIAC), the Badgers found themselves in a serious first-set battle, taking a 29-27 victory then regrouping to earn the final two sets 25-11 and 25-14 for a three-set sweep. Spring Hill racked up nine total blocks as well as a .382 (45-6-102) attack percentage against the Panthers. Individually, Klinger and Seuzeneau each tallied 10 kills and Raulerson dished out 37 assists while Vujnovich shoveled up 16 of her team's 58 total digs.
"The first set tonight was the most competitive of the day," Martin said. "We did not play well and Clark Atlanta gave us more than we wanted. We had to work very hard to win the first set, but the whole team hung in there though we faced several set points. After the first set wake-up call, we responded well, made some defensive adjustments and took the match in three," she continued. "Our middles are clicking much better with our setter and Raulerson is doing a great job of running the team."
The Badgers (10-6, 8-1 SIAC) remain in Albany on Friday to continue play in the 2015 SIAC Crossover Tournament beginning with the host ASU Golden Rams (2-7, 2-1 SIAC) at 8 a.m.
