Badgers drop two decisions at UWF
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Spring Hill College baseball team lost both halves of a non-conference doubleheader at the University of West Florida (UWF) Argonauts at Jim Spooner Field on Tuesday afternoon by the scores of 2-1 and 4-0.

The Argonauts (28-16) broke on top 1-0 in the 1st inning when left fielder Nick Kerkmann singled to right-center with two outs to drive in second baseman Nic Strasser who scored all the way from 1st base when the throw from the outfield died on the infield grass.

Spring Hill tied the game on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch of centerfielder Garrett Webb in the 4th inning that brought in right fielder Taylor Eads who led off the frame with his 16th double of the year.

A successful sacrifice squeeze bunt by Argo catcher Kyle Hamner in the bottom of the 4th inning gave UWF back a 2-1 advantage, but Badger starter Jackson Howard (7-1) stopped further damage when a bases-loaded, one-out situation resulted in a grounder to third baseman Matthew Spradlin for a force out at home and a high chopper to shortstop Thomas Smith for the out at 1st base.

UWF starter Alex Stevens (4-0) allowed the tying run to reach 3rd base in the 6th inning following an infield error and a passed ball, but ended the Badger threat with a routine grounder to 2nd base.

Howard took his first loss of the season in a complete-game effort with five hits allowed, six walks and two strikeouts. Stevens earned the win in six innings with five hits, a walk and two strikeouts while Ronnie May collected his fifth save of the year with a perfect 3-up-3-down performance in the 7th inning.

In Game 2, SHC designated hitter Ryan Stevens put a charge into a fly ball with the bases loaded and two outs in the opening frame, but Kerkmann tracked it down on the warning track in left to end the threat.

West Florida put the game's first run on the board in the 3rd inning when Kerkmann chopped a grounder high into the air behind the mound with bases loaded and one out, giving Smith the one option of taking the out at 1st base. The Argos would add three more runs in the 6th inning off a run-scoring double over 3rd base followed by an RBI-single to right and a skyrocket double to deep left-center off Badger reliever Hunter Nowak with two outs.

Badger starter Christian Bahlinger fell to 3-1 with the loss in three innings with one hit, three walks and no strikeouts while Josh McLaney (2-3) of UWF picked up the win in three innings of relief work with a hit, a walk and six strikeouts.

First baseman William Floros, Spradlin, Eads and Stevens each had two hits in the twin bill for SHC as Kerkmann enjoyed a three-hit and three-RBI day.

West Florida won the 4-game season series 3-1 over the Badgers.

The Badgers finished thier first season as a member of NCAA Division II with a 26-14 record and a perfect 16-0 mark in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). As a provisional member of NCAA Division II, the Badgers are not eligible for post-season play this year.
