Box Score 2 The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball took both halves of a non-conference doubleheader versus the Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams by the scores of 5-2 and 3-1 on Thursday afternoon at Murray Field.
In the first game, Badger starter
Caroline Sagrera (21-6) limited the Golden Rams (12-21) to three hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters. ASU starter Alexa Lopez took the complete-game loss and allowed nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Spring Hill took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning off a sacrifice fly to centerfield by senior shortstop
Shea Blanchard that plated freshman second baseman
Carmen Byrd. Three more Badger runs crossed home in the 2nd inning when freshman right fielder
Randi DeArmitt drove in left fielder junior
Lauren Stewart from 2nd base with a single to left-center and sophomore centerfielder sophomore
Jenna Charnock put a two-run triple into right-centerfield with two outs.
Stewart crushed a solo home run over the left field scoreboard in the 3rd inning while ASU responded in the 6th inning with a two-run blast out of right by designated player Toni Coleman.
Junior
Sarah Bolotte (5-0) took to the circle in the second game and allowed three consecutive Golden Ram singles with one out in the 1st inning, but left the bases loaded with two swinging strikeouts to escape the jam. From there, she settled in and did not allow a runner past 1st base until the 6th inning when a runner reached 2nd before the inning ended on a ground out to shortstop.
The Badgers pushed across two runs in the 1st inning off a wild pitch that scored Byrd and a sacrifice fly to center by junior catcher
Samantha Leach to bring in Charnock. A third run scored in the 4th inning when Badger third baseman
Emma Kittrell laced a double over the 1st base bag and brought home first baseman
Elise deBruler from 2nd base.
ASU made the final inning exciting when runners reached 1st and 2nd bases with two outs and Coleman mashed a run-scoring double into deep centerfield to leave the tying runs at 2nd and 3rd bases. Bolotte would then coax a game-ending line-drive out to centerfield from Ambrionna Atkism to seal the victory. Bolotte earned the win with seven hits and three walks surrendered while striking out five Rams.
Byrd paced the Badger offense with four hits and Charnock tallied three hits with two RBIs. Leach, deBruler and Kittrell each had two safeties on the day. Coleman had three hits for the Golden Rams and recorded all three RBIs for ASU.
Spring Hill (29-7, 13-0 SIAC West) will next host the Tuskegee University Tigerettes (8-16, 6-6 SIAC West) in a conference doubleheader on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. at Murray Field.
