Box Score 2 The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team lost both ends of a home non-conference doubleheader to the University of North Alabama (UNA) Lions by the scores of 5-4 in 10 innings and 3-0 at Murray Field on Tuesday afternoon.
In the first game, the Lions (25-5) rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the 7th inning off a one-out, bases-loaded single past the drawn-in infield by centerfielder Courtney Shields and a two-out, run-scoring walk by right fielder Libby Olinger. The Lions would later win the game in the 10th inning when Shields scampered home from 3rd base on a wild pitch.
Spring Hill had scored four runs in the 1st inning when freshman right fielder
Randi DeArmitt ripped a bases-loaded double into deep left-centerfield and was brought home off a single that found chalk down the left field line by senior first baseman
Elise deBruler.
UNA chipped away at the Bader lead with single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings when designated player Carey Grace Peebles put an RBI-single into centerfield and Olinger doubled in a run from 1st base with two outs.
BreeAnna Belvins improved to 10-3 on the year with the UNA win and allowed just five hits with six walks and four strikeouts.
The second game was a scoreless pitchers' duel for the first four innings, but Lion left fielder Bailey Nelson slipped a run-scoring single between 3rd base and the shortstop to put UNA up 1-0 in the 5th frame. UNA tacked on two more runs in the 7th inning when Nelson picked up another RBI with a single to left and later scored off a ground ball out to 2nd base by designated player Brittany Gillison.
Lion starter Hillary Carpenter (13-2) lost her no-hit bid with one out in the 7th inning when Badger pinch hitter
Rene Kausin roped a solid single into left, but was wiped of the base paths when she was caught off 1st base in a double play pop out to the pitcher to end the game. Carpenter struck out six Badgers in the win and allowed just one walk as she came one batter away from facing the minimum number of opponents possible.
Badger starter junior
Caroline Sagrera (17-5) took complete-game losses in both games, allowing five hits with six walks and 10 strikeouts in the opener and nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts in the nightcap.
For the UNA offense, Shields had four hits with an RBI and Peebles collected three hits with an RBI on the day.
Spring Hill (23-6) will next host the Mustangs (7-6) of Mount Mercy University on Thursday at Murray Field beginning at 2 p.m.
