Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) baseball team was down 9-0 after 1½ innings but rallied to win 10-9 in innings to sweep a 3-game non-conference series over the Claflin University Panthers on Sunday afternoon at historic Stan Galle Field.
The Panthers (1-9) bolted out to a 7-run lead in the top of the 1st inning off Badger starter
Jordan Fontenelle and then added two more runs in the top of the second before SHC responded with five runs in the bottom of the second.
From there, the Badgers began to chip away at the margin, scoring an unearned run in the 4th inning and earning another tally off a lead-off homer by right fielder
Taylor Eads in the 7th inning. Spring Hill would battle all the way back to tie the game in the 8th inning when Eads blasted a 2-out, 2-run shot out of left field to make it a 9-9 ballgame.
In the 11th inning, 1st baseman
Jacob Malkoff put a leadoff single into right field that was followed by an infield single by left fielder
Matthew Spradlin that was compounded by a missed catch at first base to put Malkoff and Spradlin at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Pinch hitter
Michael Ball then provided the game-winning hit with a ball off the glove of a diving Panther shortstop and into left to bring in Malkoff.
Christian Bahlinger (1-0) was the winner in one inning of relief with just one hit allowed and a strikeout. Aaron Perry took the loos in 2/3 of an inning with four hits allowed. Claflin starter Justin Vreeland went six innings with the unusual line score of six hits, six walks, one strikeout 136 pitches, three wild pitches and five hit batters.
At the plate, the Badgers recorded 15 hits as a team as Malkoff collected four hits, Eads and Spradlin each added three and 2nd baseman
Hunter DArmond slapped two more. SHC left 21 runners on base. For Claflin, the Panthers had 16 hits with four players garnering three hits apiece.
