Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) road loss to the University of North Alabama (UNA) Lady Lions on Thursday night at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
The Lady Lions (9-1-1, 5-1 GSC) broke on top 1-0 with a goal by Margarida Sousa with an assist by Eleanor Costello in the 17th minute and then just three minutes later Chloe Richards added a tally to expand the Lion lead to 2-0. Sousa tacked on the third goal with an unassisted effort in the 38th minute.
In the second half, the Lady Lions did not let up as Richards quickly made it 4-0 in the 48th minute with an unassisted score. Susan Lang of UNA made it 5-0 off an assist by Sousa in the 80th minute.
Spring Hill senior goalkeeper
Maggie Dalessio (1-7-2) made 10 saves against 24 shots and three corners by the Lady Lions while UNA keeper Shelby Thornton (9-0-1) had three saves versus five shots and a single SHC corner kick.
"Our women showed both tremendous effort and heart in tonight's match and played hard for 90 minutes," said SHC interim head coach
Michael Patrick. "Give credit to a very well disciplined and athletic UNA side that made the most of their opportunities. We'll learn from this loss and now turn our focus to Sunday's match."
The Badgers (1-7-2, 1-6 GSC) host GSC opponent the Blazers (3-7, 2-4 GSC) of Valdosta State University at Library Field on Sunday at 1 p.m.
