Lee gets past Spring Hill, 2-1
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team suffered a hard-fought 2-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) loss to the Lee University Flames on Sunday afternoon.

The Flames (7-2-1, 2-0 GSC) and Spring Hill battled to a scoreless draw in the first half, but Lee's David Perez put the visitors on the board first in the 50th minute with a toe-poke goal after an entry pass by Quade Marinell found his feet just outside the right goalpost.

Senior forward Andrew McInnis of Mandeville, La., answered back with a tying goal in the 62nd minute when an entry pass from the left side was deflected by a Flame defender but right to McInnis who alertly blasted in a score from seven yards out.

Unfortunately for the Badgers, Gabe Franco of Lee provided the game-winner in the 70th minute off a header from five yards out that found the net inside the left post off an assist from the left side by Drew Jackson.

"From Friday to Sunday, I think we showed major improvement this weekend," said SHC head coach Steve Wieczorek. "We played with a high effort today, but more importantly we learned a lot between Friday and Sunday so that's a positive outcome. As I keep saying, we have to measure this season by a standard of how much we are learning and improving, so while this is not the outcome we would like, overall, I am pleased with our performance today."

Junior SHC goalkeeper Will Carpenter (2-7) of Spanish Fort, Ala., made five saves against 12 shots and eight corner kicks by the Flames.

Flames goalkeeper Tom Halsall collected four saves versus nine shots and four corners by Spring Hill.

The Badgers (2-7, 0-4 GSC) will finish their current three-game home stand with a non-conference match versus the Hornets (6-4) of Concordia College (Ala.) from Selma on Friday at 3:30 p.m. on Library Field. Since 2004, the Badger-Hornet series is tied 3-3 with Spring Hill winning 3-1 in the last meeting in 2012.
