Badger women see No. 19 Spartans slip past defense in final minute of 3-2 2OT loss
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 non-conference home loss in double overtime to the 19th-ranked University of Tampa Spartans at Library Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Spartans (11-3-3) opened the scoring in the 8th minute of play when Lauren Cicero nailed a shot into the top of the net from straight out at 12 yards out off an entry pass from the right side by Natasia Asgedom. Cicero added her second goal of the day in the 62nd minute when she belted home a nifty right-to-left pass across the face of the goal by Gabby Scirica.
Spring Hill would not give up easily, however, and junior
Darby Rasch of Madison, Ala., made it a 2-1 Badger deficit in the 69th minute when she accepted a pass from sophomore
Madison Camet of Kenner, La., on the right side and dribbled in to beat Tampa reserve keeper Sydney Ross in a classic 1-on-1 confrontation.
Camet then tied the game at 2-2 in the 73rd minute when freshman
SarahBeth Hyde of Hattiesburg, Miss., sent a cross into the six-yard box to a waiting Camet.
The two teams would play a scoreless first overtime, but with just 37 seconds left until the game would be ruled a draw Tampa's reserve midfielder Madison Munroe pulled out the victory when she cleaned up a corner kick by Miranda Gonzalez that resulted in a frantic scramble of bodies and feet in front of the goal.
"Our women went toe-to-toe with a very good nationally ranked opponent in the University of Tampa," said SHC interim head coach
Michael Patrick. "And I am very proud of our team effort on the pitch in this match. We had some great soccer played today and I'm just happy to be part of a match like that."
Senior Badger goalkeeper
Maggie Dalessio (2-11-3) collected nine saves versus 28 shots and 12 corner kicks by Tampa while Caroline Frykgard and Ross made three total saves against nine shots and one corner by the Badgers.
The contest was also the SHC women's soccer team's Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Before the match, the Spring Hill team raised more than $650 for the fight against breast cancer that will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Badgers (2-11-3) will next host the "Classic on the Hill" at Library Field on November 6-8 beginning on Friday at 1 p.m. versus non-conference opponent the Southern Wesleyan University (SWU) Warriors (2-12).
