Badgers veto Statesmen in 1-0 GSC victory
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team ran through the raindrops on Sunday evening at Library Field and broke an eight-match losing slide with a hard-fought 1-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory over the Delta State University (DSU) Statesmen.

Senior forward Andrew McInnis of Mandeville, La., broke a scoreless deadlock in the 70th minute of play with a perfectly executed header off a corner kick by freshman Viktor Kvarnlof of Norrtalje, Sweden.

"McInnis stepped up when we needed him," said SHC head coach Steve Wieczorek. "He got a good ball from Viktor and did what he had to do with it."

Badger senior goalkeeper Jacob Files (1-1) earned the victory in just his second start of the season and made six saves against 12 shots and two corner attempts by the Statesmen (6-10, 3-6 GSC). For the DSU defense, Jacob Hauenstein made five saves against 13 shots and six corners by the Badgers.

"Give full credit to our players today," said Wieczorek after the contest. "It was truly a collective effort out there and this time we turned the one-goal decision to our favor."

When asked about what made the difference in today's outcome, Wieczorek said, "Really, we didn't change our system at all. We moved (freshman) Joakim Aakerlund up front and moved (freshman) Ahmet Demirkan to center-mid, but otherwise, we used the same approach as we have all season. Files played another good game in goal for us and we just played the way we needed to play."

The Badgers (3-11, 1-7 GSC) will host the University of West Florida Argonauts (9-5, 3-5 GSC) on Friday in a conference match beginning at 3 p.m. on Library Field. Earlier this season, the Badgers lost a 1-0 non-conference heart-breaker in double overtime to the Argos in Pensacola.
