Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) downturn to the Mississippi College (MC) Choctaws at Library Field on Friday evening.
Choctaws (4-9-1, 2-5-1 GSC) scored first in the 27th minute when Sergio Garcia cleaned up a loose ball off the foot of Elliot Rimmer who was mired in a pack of players five yards in front of the goal. Spring Hill, however, answered back with a successful penalty kick goal by redshirt freshman
Viktor Kvarnlof in the 37th minute following a MC holding foul in the keeper's box.
The deciding tally came for the Choctaws in the 73rd minute when Badger freshman
Jack LaForge was whistled for an unlucky handball in the box that resulted in a penalty kick goal for MC by their goalkeeper Humberto Pelaez.
Badger goalkeeper senior
Jacob Files (0-1) made his first start of the season and collected seven saves against 16 shots and five corner attempts by MC while the Pelaez had the unusual distinction of recording the game-winning goal and the victory in-goal with three saves against 12 Badger shots and one corner attempt.
"Our boys fought hard today and you can't fault them for their effort, by any means," said SHC head coach
Steve Wieczorek after the match. "Files stepped into goal when we needed him today and did a good job as did several of our other players, but it still hurts when it's our sixth loss by a single goal this year. In the long term, we know each of these losses is helping us learn and get better, but in the short term it doesn't make the losses any less painful."
The Badgers (2-11, 0-7 GSC) will next host the Delta State University Statesmen (5-9, 2-5 GSC) on Sunday in a conference match at Library Field beginning at 3:30 p.m. DSU holds a 4-2 advantage in the series since 2006 including a 1-0 victory in Cleveland, Miss., last year.
