Big second half lifts Shorter over Spring Hill, 4-1
Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's soccer team opened a three-game home stand at Library Field with a 4-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) loss to the Shorter University Hawks on Friday evening.

The Hawks (3-4-1, 1-0 GSC) and the Badgers were in a scoreless deadlock at the intermission, but Shorter took a 1-0 lead with a goal by Darwin Lom in the 63rd minute that was promptly followed by a second tally from Charlie Dennis in the 69th minute.

Spring Hill's deficit grew to 4-0 as Christopher Cummins cleaned up a deflected loose ball that found him standing at the right post for a poke-in goal in the 73rd minute and Lom finished the Hawk scoring with his second goal of the day in the 76th minute.

The Badger avoided a shutout as freshman Joakim Aakerlund scored in the 79th minute off a set piece play begun by freshman Sivert Siem into senior Andrew McInnis who found Aakerlund for the goal.

Junior goalkeeper Will Carpenter (2-6) of Spanish Fort, Ala., made four saves in his 76 minutes in-goal while senior Jacob Files collected a single save while completing the final 14 minutes of game time. All told, Shorter got off 19 shots and seven corner kicks versus the Badgers.

On the other end of the field, Hawks goalkeeper Austin Trevers made four saves versus 10 shots and three corner attempts from Spring Hill.

The Badgers (2-6, 0-3 GSC) will next host the Lee University Flames (5-2-1, 0-0 GSC) at Library Field for a conference contest on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Since 2004, Spring Hill is 1-4 versus Lee, including a 3-0 loss in Cleveland, Tenn., last season.
