Box Score The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team won a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game in overtime by a score of 76-67 over the Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Wildcats on Wednesday evening at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
Spring Hill held a 31-26 advantage over the Wildcats (3-11, 1-2 SIAC East) only to see FVSU rally to take a 40-36 lead with 11:19 remaining in the game.
The Badgers regrouped and launched an 8-2 run to gain a 44-42 lead with 7:54 on the clock. From there, the Badgers held the advantage until just 9 seconds remained in the game and Carmenonique Dawson drained a 3-pointer to stake FVSU to a 59-57 lead. Senior guard
Elissa VandeWaa would then beat the buzzer with a layup on the other end to send the game into overtime.
With 2:06 on the clock, the Badgers found the game tied 67-67, but sophomore guard
Amee Smith dropped in two consecutive jumpers to make it a 71-67 Badger advantage with 48 seconds left and SHC would not look back from there.
Smith led the Badgers with 18 points as sophomore center
Leah Washington added 12 points. SHC shot 53.7% (29-54) from the field and 37.5% (6-16) from 3-point land while also winning the rebounding war 42 to 36 under the baskets. Turnovers continue to be a problem for the Badgers as they suffered 33 fumbles against 16 Wildcat steals.
For FVSU, Dawson had a game-high 19 points and Brittnee Hazel contributed 15 points as the Wildcats shot 36.5% (27-74) from the floor and 25% (4-16) from long distance. FVSU lost 22 turnovers to 10 steals by Spring Hill.
Spring Hill (5-5, 2-0 SIAC West) will next host SIAC opponent the enedict College Tigers (7-3, 2-0 SIAC East) at 2 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
