Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team upset the East Division leading Claflin University Lady Panthers in a 61-51 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) road win on Thursday evening at the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center.

The Badgers took an early 13-6 lead over the Lady Panthers (9-5, 3-3 SIAC East), but Claflin answered the challenge and tied the game at 17-17 with less than five minutes remaining in the half. SHC freshman guard Jennifer Clark responded with a 3-point bucket on the other end, but two free throws and a jump shot basket by the Lady Panthers gave Claflin their first lead of the game at 21-20 with two minutes to go until the intermission.

The score was knotted at 21 for the final 30 seconds of the period but a late surge by Claflin put the Lady Panthers up 26-24 going into halftime.

Freshman guard Amber Lane opened the 2nd half with a quick backdoor layup and then hit on a jumper sandwiched around a Claflin free throw to put SHC up 28-27. From there, the two teams went at each other hammer and tong as neither team could claim more a 4-point advantage and found themselves tied at 48-48 with 5½ minutes on the clock.

Senior guard Elissa VandeWaa sank a deep 3-pointer from the right side to stake SHC to a 51-50 lead at 3:56 and Clark stretched the bulge to five points at 56-51 with two free throws at 1:30 remaining. Freshman guard Jewel Hill, senior forward Twarner Witherspoon and Clark then added five more free throws over the last 30 seconds to ice the upset victory.

Clark led the charge for SHC with 12 points and sophomore guard Amee Smith added 10 points while senior guard Shakiema Ravenell scored 11 points for the Lady Panthers.

Spring Hill made 40.9% (18-44) of their shots including 50% (5-10) of their 3-point attempts and held Claflin to 25.9% (14-54) from the field and 23.1% (3-13) in 3-point accuracy. The Badgers also edged out the Panthers under the boards with a 38-36 advantage in rebounding. SHC lost 21 turnovers against seven Claflin steals while benefiting from 18 turnovers by the Panthers under the pressure of six Badger steals.

Spring Hill (6-7, 3-2 SIAC West) now travels to Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday to square off with the Clark Atlanta University Panthers (5-6, 2-3 SIAC East) in an inter-divisional game in Epps Gymnasium beginning at 6 p.m. (Eastern).
