Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team earned a 74-53 non-conference road victory over the University of Montevallo Lady Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Trustmark Arena.
The Lady Falcons (1-6) opened the scoring with a backdoor cut, but SHC answered with four fast break buckets on the other end to claim a quick 8-2 lead that they held at the first timeout with 16 minutes left on the 2nd half clock. Head coach
Karen McConico's women then built a 12-4 lead off a fast-hands defense and by breaking the Falcons' full-court press for easy baskets.
At the 8-minute mark SHC continued to hold a 21-9 cushion as the Badger fast break offense continued to work. Spring Hill built out a 32-17 lead following a hoop-and-the-harm 3-point play by sophomore guard
Amee Smith with less than 30 seconds to play as SHC maintained a 32-19 advantage at the intermission.
Montevallo cut it down to a 34-27 to open the 2nd half until junior guard
Natalie Harper drained two 3-point buckets and a slicing layup down the center of the lane to rebuild a 45-29 SHC advantage.
With the score 52-33, strong post play and four consecutive free throws by the Lady Falcons cut the deficit down to 52-41, but senior guard
Elissa VandeWaa knocked down a 3-pointer from the left side to keep the bulge at 55-41.
Montevallo kept the pressure on the Badgers, but for every basket by the Falcons, the SHC ladies found an answer on the other end for a 68-50 lead with 3:37 to play.
The victory was the first over an NCAA Division II opponent as an NCAA DII member for the Badgers who also picked up their second consecutive victory after snapping a 15-game losing streak last Saturday with a decision over NAIA member William Carey University.
SHC had four of its five starters crack the double-digit scoring mark with VandeWaa putting 14 points on the board and Smith contributing 13 points as Harper and sophomore center
Leah Washington each connected for 10 points. Washington also slapped down four shots and hauled down eight rebounds. As a team, the Badgers shot an admirable 50% (31-62) from both the field and the 3-point line (8-16). Spring Hill also won the rebounding war 36-32 while taking away 12 steals and forcing Montevallo into 21 turnovers.
For the home-standing Falcons, Jacquelyn Thompson led the way with 15 points as Montevallo completed 37.7% (20-53) of its shots including 20% (2-20) from 3-point distance. The Falcons stole the ball six times as SHC continued to suffer from the turnover bug this season with 17 fumbles in the game.
Spring Hill (2-3) next travels to Tougaloo, Miss., on Monday to face the Tougaloo College Lady Bulldogs (0-6) in a non-conference match that tips off at 5 p.m.
