Spring Hill takes two wins at SIAC West Round-Up
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Spring Hill College volleyball team swept its opening two matches on Friday afternoon at the Southern States Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division Round-Up hosted by Stillman College at Birthright Alumni Hall.

In the opening match with Kentucky State University (KSU), the Thorobreds (13-8, 11-2 SIAC) took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 victory in the opening set, but the Badgers rallied to win the next three sets 25-21, 25-23 and 25-22 in route to a hard-fought 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22) victory.

Sophomore Savanah Becnel of Metairie, La., led the Badger charge with 14 kills followed closely by fellow sophomore Molly Griffin of Westlake Village, Calif., with 12 kills and senior Megan Haber of Lillian, Ala., with 11 kills. Freshman setter Marie Rooks of Tallahassee, Fla., handed out 42 assists with two service aces. On defense, junior Sami Hantak of St. Louis, Mo., had four total blocks and senior Sami Maurer from St. Louis scooped up 27 digs.

For the team totals, SHC hit for a .204 average (50-20-147) with five aces, 68 digs and nine total blocks while KSU earned a .188 average (56-26-160) with two aces, 62 digs and eight blocks.

In the second match the Badgers made the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians (2-19, 0-11 SIAC) disappear with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-9) victory in which freshman Julie Vujnovich from Belle Chasse, La., and freshman Hannah Masoner of Camden, Tenn., each registered eight kills. Junior setter Mallory Raulerson of Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic High School had 23 assists.

All told, SHC hit for a .471 average (43-10-70) with 12 aces, two blocks and 22 digs while holding the Magicians to a -.020 average (12-13-50) with no aces, two blocks and 12 digs.

Spring Hill (15-4, 11-0 SIAC) will remain in Tuscaloosa on Saturday to wrap up play in the Round-Up versus the Lane College Dragons (0-13, 0-12 SIAC) beginning at 10 a.m.
