Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. – Perhaps feeling the effects of playing six road matches in five days while traveling 1246 miles over the road, the Spring Hill College volleyball team stumbled to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-13) non-conference loss to the Columbus State University (CSU) Cougars on Monday night in the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr Center.
The Cougars (8-10) and the Badgers battled point-for-point in the early going of the first set, but CSU took a 15-12 lead midway through the frame. SHC rallied to build an 18-16 bulge, but CSU stormed back late to take a late 22-21 lead. The Badgers showed their determination, however, and fought back to take a 25-23 victory.
Set Number 2 saw SHC take a quick 5-2 lead only to watch the Cougars use a late run to secure a 25-17 win and knot the match at 1-1.
CSU raced out to an 11-5 advantage in the third set and coasted to a 25-14 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match. Spring Hill answered with a 7-4 run to open the fourth set, but a six-point run by the Cougars put CSU ahead to stay at 10-7 as they closed the match with a 25-13 victory.
Sophomore
Molly Griffin of Westlake Village, Calif., put down 11 kills and freshman
Marie Rooks of Tallahassee, Fla., collected 13 assists while senior
Sami Maurer of St. Louis, Mo., had 20 digs. In total, SHC built a .110 attack percentage (33-16-154) with 63 digs, four aces and three total team blocks.
Erika Gelzinyte had 21 kills to pace the Cougars who hit .284 (66-22-155) as a team with 93 digs, five aces and five total team blocks.
Spring Hill (20-6, 13-0 SIAC) finally returns home after a 10-match road odyssey to host Stillman College (10-8, 7-7 SIAC) and Tuskegee University (10-11, 8-8 SIAC) in a conference tri-match on Saturday beginning with the Badgers and Stillman at 11 a.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
