Joe Niland

Joe Niland returned to the SHC family to take the reins as Athletic Director in the summer of 2019 after a 20-year career at the University of Mobile as the men's basketball head coach. Niland guided the Rams to five NAIA National Tournament appearances and also served as the school’s athletic director where he oversaw 17 athletics programs. He is a 1981 graduate of SUNY Buffalo.

Famous Family

  • Father, the late Joe Sr., coached at Canisius College 1947-54 and served as Director of College Scouting for the Buffalo Braves of the NBA
  • Brother, Dave, is head coach at Penn State-Behrend College
  • Uncle, the late Tom Niland, coached at LeMoyne College 1947-72 and served 45 years as AD
  • Cousin, John Beilein, is the Senior Player Development Advisor for the Detroit Pistons and was head coach at Michigan, where he became the all-time winningest coach in program history. He took the Wolverines to two National Championship appearances, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and four B1G Championships. He also took West Virginia to the Elite Eight in 2004-05
