AVCA, Missouri and Mobile Sports Hall of Fame member Dr. Peggy Martin became the volleyball head coach at Spring Hill in 2009 after building a record as the winningest coach in the history of NCAA Division II with 33 consecutive winning seasons at the University of Central Missouri (UCM)Â where she compiled a 1,064-281-8 record. One of only two collegiate volleyball coaches to reach 1,300 wins at any level of competition, she became college volleyball's overall career leader in wins by a head coach with 1,375 victories in 2019.
During her years with the Badgers, Martin has built a 424-96 overall record and a 233-9 record in regular season conference games. She added the program's sixth-straight SIAC Tournament title to the trophy case in 2024. She also led the program to four consecutive SSAC West Division crowns as an NAIA member from 2010 to 2013. In 2011, she directed Spring Hill to the NAIA National Championship Tournament for only the second time in program history and reached pool play at the Final Site for the first time ever. Wins over Xavier University (La.) and Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) also notched the first two National Tournament wins in SHC history.
The Badgers returned to the NAIA National Tournament in 2012 where they lost in the Opening Round at Missouri Baptist in a hard-fought 3-2 decision, but the 2013 SHC squad returned to the NAIA National Championship Tournament's Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa while capturing both the SSAC regular season and tournament championships.
In 2015, Martin launched the Beach Volleyball program at Spring Hill College as the Badgers recorded a 4-13 mark in the premier season of the fledgling NCAA sport. Since 2017, she has assumed a more operational role with Beach Volleyball, but remains a crucial part of a program that finished with third place finishes in AVCA Small College National Championships in 2018 and 2019.
The Badgers emerged as a regional contender in their first season of NCAA postseason eligibility in 2018 with a perfect 17-0 romp through the SIAC to earn both the conference regular season and tournament titles en route to a South Region appearance where they bowed 3-1 at traditional power Palm Beach Atlantic University. SHC continued to roll in 2019 with another perfect run through the SIAC regular season and tournament before falling 3-0 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. at the NCAA Division II South Region Championship. After the COVID-19 pandemic caused the 2020 season to be canceled, Martin didn't miss a beat by leading Spring Hill to a three-peat as SIAC Champions in 2021. The Badgers made their third consecutive South Region appearance, where they fell 3-0 to West Florida. In 2022, the defending SIACÂ champions defended their title at home while hosting the conference tournament. SHC would move on to its fourth straight South Region appearance before falling to Tampa, 3-1. Martin continued to dominate the SIAC with her fifth consecutive tournament title in 2023 and again would face Tampa in the South Regional where the Badgers fell, 3-0. In 2024, Martin earned her fourth SIAC Coach of the Year honor after leading the Badgers to their sixth conference championship in a row. Spring Hill went on to face Lynn in the South Regional for the second time ever and fell, 3-0.
In 2006, she was inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame, making her and her father, Bill Martin, the only father-daughter tandem to appear on the Hall's roll. She is also a member of the McGill-Toolen Catholic High School Hall of Fame. Martin has received the Leanne Grotke Achievement Award from Indiana University (IU) Athletics and the Anita Aldrich Outstanding Alumni Award from the IU School of Heath, Physical Education and Recreation. She was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in 2009, followed by the Missouri Sports Hall of fame in 2023.Â
Over 33 seasons at UCM, Martin never suffered a losing season, won 25 matches in 31 consecutive seasons and won or shared 19 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles. Her teams made a record 25 consecutive NCAA Div. II Tournament appearances, reached the "Elite Eight" six times and finished as the National Runner-up in 1987. She has won 24 Coach of the Year Awards including the 1987 NCAA Division II National Coach of Year Award.
Martin first served as softball and volleyball coach at UCM when she started her Division II career in 1975 and even stepped into an assistant women's basketball coaching role for the 1976-77 season.
Her first collegiate coaching experience came at Florida Southern College as a volleyball and basketball coach at the then club level program.
As Mobile did not have girl's high school sports when Martin was a child, she played volleyball and basketball and ran track with St. Catherine's High School's CYO teams where she excelled in each. In college, she played at Indiana University and led the women's basketball team to two consecutive national tournament berths while winning four letters in softball and three letters in field hockey. She completed her bachelor's degree at IU in 1972 and earned a master's degree from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1974. In 1980, she completed her doctorate in physical education at Indiana University.
As one of the driving forces behind the growth of women's collegiate volleyball over the last 30 years, Martin wrote 101 Volleyball Drills and produced four instructional videos Training the Setter, Competitive Volleyball Drills, The Side Attack, and Training the Libero.
