MOBILE, Ala. -- The Spring Hill College women's cross country team posted four personal-best performances Saturday at the Azalea City Classic at Blakely State Park, finishing sixth as a team in the women's 5,000-meter race.
The Badgers totaled 140 points with all six runners contributing to the team's finish.
Evelyn Herrera led Spring Hill, placing 21st overall in 20:02.3. Kerrigan Klevanosky followed in 33rd at 22:33.8, while Alexa Manuel finished 36th in 23:33.1.
Leia Mayeux crossed the finish line in 37th at 24:43.2, followed by Mariam Cosky in 39th at 25:52.2 and Lydia Hamilton in 40th at 26:06.1.
Klevanosky, Manuel, Mayeux and Cosky each recorded personal-best times during the 5K.
"This was great meet for our women's team," head coach Craig McVey said. "It was the best day of the Fall weather-wise. This was the first time we'd ever raced at Blakely State Park. We competed well and raced really hard. Today was the first race this specific group had raced together."
The Azalea City Classic marked the first race of the season for this particular group, giving the Badgers an opportunity to establish a baseline while continuing to build toward the conference championship.
"There's more in the tank for everyone," McVey said.
Spring Hill was also without two additional team members due to illness, leaving McVey optimistic about the potential of the group once the full roster is available.
"We had 4 personal bests from this group...some big ones.... We had two more team members out due to illness so when we have them back.... things will get interesting," McVey said.
With five weeks remaining before the conference meet, the Badgers will return to work with another opportunity to improve.
"We're 5 weeks out from our conference meet. Time to get busy and get back to work...and make every day count," McVey said.
Spring Hill returns to action Oct. 3 at Nicholls State.
"We need to be ready to take another step," McVey said.
