The Spring Hill College softball team battled cross-town foe University of Mobile, but would fall in both halves of a doubleheader, 3-2 in eight innings and 5-1.
Game One: Spring Hill 2, Mobile 3 (8 Innings)
Spring Hill had the game-winning run 60 feet from home plate in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to push her across and instead, fell 3-2 in extra innings to Mobile.
The Badgers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as
Jesslyn Gordon followed up
Janci Aube's leadoff single with an RBI double.
That's where the score remained until the fourth inning when Mobile scored the equalizer. The Rams then took the lead in the top of the sixth, putting Spring Hill behind 2-1 with two innings to go.
The Badgers clawed back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, as
Bethany Ahrens came through to help herself in the pitcher's circle with an RBI single to make it 2-2. Gordon drew a walk on a 3-2 count to open the inning, then
Meadow Villar singled to put two runners on. With pinch runners at both first and second, Ahrens stepped to the plate and ripped a single to the outfield that scored
Kayla Coley-Drayton from second and tied the game. Spring Hill had a few chances to push across the go-ahead run, but the score remained tied heading into the seventh inning.
Mobile threatened to re-take the lead, but Ahrens got an inning-ending double-play to take the game to the bottom of the seventh in a tie game. The Badgers again had a shot, this time to win the game, as Villar stepped to the plate with runners on the corners. Mobile found a way to keep Villar, Spring Hill's top hitter, from delivering the winning run, hitting her with a pitch to load the bases. Ahrens would follow with a pop out to send the game to extras where Mobile would take the lead in the top of the eighth and win, 3-2.
Game Two: Spring Hill 1, Mobile 5
Mobile scored three runs in the first two innings, then added two more in the fifth to take down Spring Hill, 5-1, to sweep the doubleheader.
Leighanna Turk pitched well in her five innings in the circle, giving up only two earned runs on six hits, but Spring Hill had three errors, leading to three unearned runs.
Abigail Christ had 2 of the Badgers' 5 hits in the game.
Spring Hill trailed 5-0 heading into the sixth inning, but they broke the shutout by getting one run across. They threatened to build a larger rally, with two runners on, but
Molly Pitts' liner was snagged by the shortstop to end the inning with the lone run scored, as Spring Hill would go on to lose, 5-1.
The Badgers conclude the regular season with a home doubleheader against the United States Sports University on Thursday, April 23rd. The opening game starts at 1 p.m.
