Softball Sweeps Kentucky State in Pair of Five-Inning Games

The Spring Hill College softball team ran their streak of SIAC victories shortened by run rule to seven after a pair of five-inning wins over visiting Kentucky State. The Badgers wins of 9-1 and 8-0 moved their record to 19-2 in SIAC play and 27-20 overall.

Game One: Spring Hill 9, Kentucky St. 1
Leighanna Turk scattered five Kentucky St. hits across five innings and the offense came through with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to walk-off the 9-1, five-inning victory over the Thorobrettes.

The Badgers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning as Destiny Pierce's groundout brought in Molly Pitts from third to make it 1-0.

Kentucky State tied the game at one in the third and that's where the score would hold until the bottom of the fourth, when Spring Hill's bats came alive for a two-out rally. Amanda Glowacki hit a single to center, then moved to third after Pierce ripped a double to right field. Alli Mangan followed that with a single to right that brought in Glowacki, and then Spring Hill successfully executed a double steal to push their lead to 3-1.

The bats came through again in the fifth and scored enough runs to implement the run rule and end the game. Meadow Villar started things with a single, the first of five-straight base hits that plated three runs. Pitts singled to drive in Kayla Coley-Drayton, then Natalee Curry singled in Oscha Carter to push it to 5-1. Glowacki tacked on another, with her base hit to center field scoring Pitts from second base to make it 6-1.

After the Badgers' first out, Mangan hit an infield single to load the bases and bring Janci Aube to the plate. Aube came through with a two-RBI single, putting Spring Hill on the doorstep of the run rule victory. McKenzie King delivered the winning run as her groundout scored Mangan from third and gave the Badgers the 9-1 win.

Game Two: Spring Hill 8, Kentucky St. 0
The Badgers scored all eight runs over the first two innings to roll to their second five-inning victory of the day.

Emma Curry threw a one hitter, striking out five to pick up her third win of the year. Meadow Villar had a team-high 3 RBI and McKenzie King had 2 hits, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Seven-of-nine Spring Hill batters had a hit and five-of-nine had at least one RBI.

Janci Aube led off the first inning with a walk, then stole her 14th base of the year to move into scoring position. King delivered and raced into third with an RBI triple to make it 1-0. She would then come in on Villar's sacrifice fly to give the Badgers the two-run lead.

Spring Hill took full control of the game in the second inning, plating six runs to make it 8-0 after two. A walk by Destiny Pierce to lead off the inning got things started as Pierce would come in on a single by Oscha Carter to take the score to 3-0. After another Aube walk and stolen bases by Carter and Aube, King recorded her second RBI of the game to push it to 4-0. Villar had a 2-RBI double and Molly Pitts followed with an RBI double of her own to quickly turn the Badgers' four-run lead into a seven-run lead. A fly out only slightly slowed Spring Hill as Glowacki's single pushed across the sixth run of the inning and made it 8-0 after two.

Curry was dealing, riding a perfect game through three innings, but she walked and hit a batter in the fourth to run into slight trouble. She worked out of it, however, striking out the last batter of the inning to keep her no-hitter intact. Curry carried the no-hitter into the fifth inning, but Kentucky St. broke it up with two outs to go before the Badgers came away with the 8-0 victory.

Spring Hill will look to complete the three-game sweep of the Thorobrettes tomorrow, April 19th, at 1 p.m.
