Spring Hill Splits Final Day of Battle on the Bayou
BATON ROUGE, La. - Spring Hill College's beach volleyball team closed out play at LSU's Battle on the Bayou Tournament Saturday, taking on a pair of Division I foes in Nicholls and New Orleans.

At the end of the day, the Sandy Badgers had knocked off Nicholls, 4-1, before losing to New Orleans by an identical 4-1 score.

Against Nicholls (8-19), Spring Hill got three of its four wins in straight sets and the Sandy Badgers are now 7-1 all-time against the Colonels. Jaylyne Bell and Marissa Peck beat Hailey Mason and Ana Valentin, 21-11, 21-3 at No. 1, Claire Hayes and Alessandra Lane got past Addi Prine and Tierney Terell, 21-19, 21-17 in the No. 2 match, and Reagan Huff and Landry Tea teamed up for a 21-14, 21-18 win over Carly Lang and Brooklyn Wilkinson at No. 4. The Sandy Badgers' No. 3 team of Lillie Casey and Ashlyn Whiteside also were victorious, rallying for a 16-21, 21-8, 15-10 win over Ariana Matallana and Madison Smith. In the No. 5 match, Spring Hill's team of Ella Faliveno lost 21-19, 21-12 to Reagan Erickson and Claire Reed.

Even though the scoreline for the New Orleans match showed a 4-1 victory for the Privateers (11-13), it was a battle throughout and three of New Orleans' four wins were three-set victories. Spring Hill - which still leads the all-time series with New Orleans, 18-6 - got its win at No. 4, where Huff and Tea knocked off Kyle Lyons and Mona Salgado, 21-16, 21-16. Hayes and Lane lost 21-8, 19-21, 15-9 to Brooke Dow and Ashley Zalazar in the No. 2 match, Casey and Whiteside battled before falling to Lucci Alexander and Renata Dykstra, 26-24, 15-21, 15-13, at No. 3, and the Sandy Badgers' No. 5 pair of Johnson and Monica Vargo lost 21-16, 16-21, 16-14 to Malia Kampfe and Molly Perry. In the No. 1 match, Bell and Peck dropped a 21-8, 21-11 decision to Cassie Sieling and Ellie Sieling.

The Sandy Badgers (9-13) now prepare for the AVCA Small College Beach Championships, which will be held April 17-19 at the Gulf Shores Public Beaches in Gulf Shores, Ala. Spring Hill will find out its seeding and pool play schedule on Sunday.
