The Spring Hill softball team dropped both halves of a non-conference doubleheader to West Florida, losing game one, 10-1, and game two, 7-5.
Game 1: Spring Hill 1, West Florida 10
The Badgers manufactured the game's opening run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Spring Hill, with one out, loaded the bases and
Molly Pitts reached on a fielder's choice that scored
Jesslyn Gordon from first.
Destiny Pierce followed with a single to re-load the bases, but
McKenzie King would pop out to end the threat.
Bethany Ahrens was dealing in the circle, giving up just one hit through the game's first three innings, but West Florida plated four runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. The Argonauts were the beneficiaries of a pair of Spring Hill errors that extended the inning and put the Badgers in a hole. West Florida added another 6 runs in the fifth inning to put Spring Hill behind 10-1, and the Badgers went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Game 2: Spring Hill 5, West Florida 7
After falling behind 6-0, the Badgers staged a late-game comeback, cutting their deficit to just two with two innings to go, but their comeback would fall short as Spring Hill would drop game two, 7-5.
West Florida scored twice in the first inning, three in the second inning, and another in the fifth to put Spring Hill behind, 6-0.
Ahrens, up with two runners on, came through with a two-out single to score
Janci Aube to break the shutout and make it 6-1. That woke up the Badger offense as the two-out rally continued with Pitts walking to load the bases. Next up was Pierce, who cleared the bases with a double, to make it 6-4. Pierce was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple, bringing an end to the inning with Spring Hill trailing by two.
The deficit grew to three heading into their final at-bats, with Spring Hill trying to rally. The Badgers, down to their last out, had the bases loaded and the winning run at the plate.
Oscha Carter came through with a single down the left field line that scored one, but the next batter would fly out to end the game.
The Badgers have a short break before traveling to Daphne, Ala. on April 9th to take on the United States Sports University for a pair of non-conference games. The double-header is set to start at 12 p.m.
