The Spring Hill softball team got back to their winning ways in SIAC play with a double-header sweep of Lane College Saturday afternoon. The Badgers won the first game 7-1 before taking game two, 9-0, in five innings. Spring Hill improves their record to 19-16 overall and 13-2 in SIAC play.
Game 1: Spring Hill 7, Lane 1
The Badgers plated at least one run in each of the game's first five innings to build a lead they would not relinquish, defeating Lane, 7-1, in the opening game of the double-header.
Spring Hill had 11 hits, with
Janci Aube,
Meadow Villar,
Bethany Ahrens, and
Oscha Carter each recording multi-hit games. Villar and Ahrens both had 3-for-4, 1 RBI days, Aube was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Carter was 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and a run scored.
Earning the win, in a bounce back performance, was
Bethany Ahrens. The junior pitched four innings, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 10.
Emma Sites closed out the win, giving up just the one earned run over the final three innings.
After Ahrens retired the Lane hitters in order to open the game, Villar came through with a two-out single to bring in
Jesslyn Gordon and put Spring Hill on the board. Then, in the second inning, Carter's single with two outs extended the inning and brought Aube to the plate. After Carter hit a two-out single and stole both second and third base, Aube hit a triple to center field to make it 2-0.
The Badgers broke open the game in the third inning, plating three runs. Spring Hill led off the inning with back-to-back singles, bringing
McKenzie King to the plate. King doubled down the third base line, bringing in one run and moving Ahrens to third. Ahrens would steal home to make it 4-0, then Carter singled to score King and make it 5-0 after three.
Spring Hill would add one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, Ahrens doubling in Gordon in the fourth and Aube driving in Christ in the fifth, to make it 7-0. Lane broke up the shutout in the seventh inning, but Sites closed the door and delivered the Badger victory.
Game 2: Spring Hill 9, Lane 0 (F/5)
Spring Hill rode a 4-run first inning to a 9-0, 5-inning victory to sweep the double-header over Lane.
The Badgers had another 11 hits in game two, with Villar, Ahrens, and Carter posting multi-hit efforts. Villar was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, and Ahrens and Carter were each 2-for-3 with a run scored, Ahrens also driving in one run.
Leighanna Turk and
Belle Sheffield combined for the shutout, scattering just three hits across 5 total innings.
Spring Hill scored four runs in the first inning, all coming with two outs. Villar drove in Aube to open the scoring, then, after a single and a walk loaded the bases,
Amanda Glowacki hit a base-clearing triple to make it 4-0.
The Badgers had another two-out rally in the bottom of the second, with Gordon producing an RBI-single to bring in Carter and Villar coming up with another RBI hit, this one being a double to score Gordon from first, making it 6-0.
King's RBI-double made it 7-0 after three and then the Badgers added two more in the fourth, with an RBI base knock by Ahrens and an RBI groundout by Glowacki, to extend the lead to 9-0. Spring Hill then shut the door on the win, ending the game with a double-play.
Spring Hill and Lane close out their three-game series tomorrow, March 29th with a 1 p.m. game.
