The Spring Hill College softball team dropped both ends of a midweek, road doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, falling 7-4 in game one and 6-1 in game two. The Badgers are now 5-9 on the season ahead of their SIAC opener this weekend.
Game 1 – Montevallo 7, Spring Hill 4
Janci Aube and
Bethany Ahrens each had home runs for the Badgers, but a seven-run fifth inning for Montevallo led to the Spring Hill defeat.
After
Meadow Villar opened the second inning by being hit by a pitch, Ahrens blasted a home run to left center, making it 2-0 for Spring Hill. Later in the inning,
Kelci O'Dell hit a one-out single, but the Badgers couldn't add to their lead as a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
Janci Aube then led off the top of the third inning with a walk and stole second to put herself in scoring position. The next two batters could neither drive Aube home nor advance her to third base, but Villar came through with a two-out, RBI single to bring Aube home and push the Badgers' advantage to three.
Ahrens continued to deal in the circle, carrying a one-hitter through the fourth inning, and then in the top of the fifth, Aube added a solo shot to put Spring Hill up, 4-0.
But, in the bottom of the fifth inning, Montevallo began working counts and they finally got to Ahrens. She issued two walks and hit a batter in the inning, but the real damage was done by two Falcon home runs which turned Spring Hill's 4-0 lead into a 7-4 deficit by the end of the inning.
The Badgers were only able to conjure one baserunner over the final two innings as Spring Hill would fall, 7-4.
Game 2 – Montevallo 6, Spring Hill 1
McKenzie King went 2-for-3 with a double and
Molly Pitts went 1-for-3, hitting a solo home run, in the Badgers' 6-1 loss in game two of the doubleheader.
The Badgers didn't get their first baserunner until the third inning with King's first hit of the game, but she was left stranded as the game remained scoreless.
Montevallo scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning, then made it 5-0 in the fourth and tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-0.
Pitts led off the seventh inning with her first home run of the season, but that was the lone run of the game for Spring Hill as the game came to an end with a 6-1 final score.
