Four Badgers in Double Figures in ASU Loss

MOBILE, Ala. Madison Dowling led the way with 21 points, Nicole Blanch scored 12, while Allison Irby and Laurie Severe each added 10 points, but the Spring Hill College Badgers fell 78-68 Saturday afternoon in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. 

The Badgers fell to 7-16 overall and 5-15 in the SIAC, while Albany State moved to 13-9 overall and 12-9 in the SIAC.

Spring Hill opened on an 8-2 run after Irby splashed a three-pointer with 6:16 in the first quarter. After the Golden Rams forced a brief tie at 10-10, the Badgers pushed for a 16-12 lead following a three-pointer by Jenice Adjessom. However, Albany State rallied once more and forced an 18-18 tie to end the period. 

The Badgers rebuilt a 23-20 advantage when Amy Elliot hit a three-pointer with 8:20 remaining. However, the Golden Rams put together a 17-5 run, taking a 37-28 lead with 2:19 to go. Adjessom hit a shot with 21 seconds left to cut the score to 39-33 before the half. 

SHC cut the lead to as low as three points following free throws by Madison Dowling with 6:35 on the third quarter clock. However, for the majority of the period, the lead fluctuated between seven and nine points before Albany State found a way to take a nine-point, 59-50, lead to the final quarter. 

Nicole Blanch hit a three-pointer to bring the Badgers within six points at 65-59 with six minutes on the clock, and a layup from Irby cut the lead to six once again at 71-65 with 2:06 remaining. Unfortunately, the Golden Rams kept the game out of reach for Spring Hill in a 78-68 victory for the visitors.

Notes and Numbers:
  • The 21 points from Madison Dowling marked the third time she had reached at least 20 points in a game. Dowling has reached double figures in 18 games this season.
  • In addition to her 10 points, Allison Irby led on the boards with six rebounds. 
  • Albany State had five players in double-digit points, led by Na'Haviya Paxton and Sariah Johnson, who both had 16. 
  • The Badgers shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, 40 percent (10-of-25) from three, and 100 percent (10-of-10) from the free throw line.
