MOBILE, Ala. – Spring Hill College Athletics mourns the loss of men's basketball alumnus Eric Lovett ('97).
Â
Full Obituary
Lovett, a native of Mobile and proud alumnus of C.F. Vigor High School ('93), was a strong leader and a talented point guard for SHC. He helped lead the Badgers to the 1994 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Championship and a NAIA National Tournament appearance.
The four-year starter went on to capture two All-GCACÂ selections and set the program record for single-game steals with seven against Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) on January 15, 1994. After completing his bachelor's degree at Spring Hill and his master's at the University of South Alabama, Lovett began his teaching career at Williamson High School, where he also started his ministry.
After his time at Williamson, he went on to serve as an assistant coach under head coach Otis Hugley at LeFlore High School. A short time after arriving at LeFlore, he took over as head coach and guided the Rattlers to a regional championship. He became senior sponsor and head of the math department at LeFlore, mentoring new teachers and impacting the lives of many students.
Lovett's impact was felt by many in the community both on and off the court. He continued coaching AAU teams, taught swing out dance, was a member of the AVNGRZ DJZ and served on the board of the nonprofit organization Brothers Working Together. As a lifetime member of Mount Hebron Church Ministries, he remained active in Youth Choir and other youth ministries.Â
Athletic director
Joe Niland, who coached Lovett at SHC, remembered him fondly. "Eric was as tough and competitive as any player I ever coached. His freshman year, he battled through a late-season injury to help us to a conference title. He excelled both on and off court. He always had that great smile no matter how he was feeling, the Badgers and Mobile community lost a special person."
