They Said It
Head Coach Craig Kennedy
On the game
"They [West Florida] are going to come out and play hard. Watching them on film, they're a real tough, cutting, hard playing team, which is good because it's like our conference teams. I thought our fans were just fantastic tonight, my gosh, just the sound in that gym. You know, with the people we had in there and the type of game it was. That's exciting basketball and obviously we like to score points. We got to block out better. That's what hurt us tonight, not blocking out and that's a mental thing. We got to be tougher on that. I thought
Jorclay Kaniki came off the bench and gave us huge minutes. The same with
Jayden Webley. Webley came in and gave us some big-time minutes in there and he's just getting better and better because you have to guard him because he's got such touch around the basket. I was really proud of the way those two guys came in and played.
Collin Coates gave us some good minutes early when Eli got in foul trouble. I like scoring points like that and
Walter Peggs Jr. makes it for an interesting game. He takes some shots. But what I'm most proud of with Walter is his free throw percentage is 100 percent. We were 88 percent as a team today. That's pretty dad gum good. It was an exciting game and I think it really sets us up well for when we start conference games now."
Â
On Walter Peggs' performance
"He shoots the ball pretty well. I mean, when he's holding his follow through, it doesn't matter where the rest of the body goes, technically, as long as that elbow is up under the ball and you hold your follow through. Walter's got body parts going every which way when he shoots it and that's just the way he is and he's a hard-working guy. He gets in the gym. He's worked on his on his game and he's fearless."
Â
On Steven Lyles
"I got after him a little bit in the locker room and challenged him and Steven really rose to the occasion. He's the consummate teammate, he is the consummate team player, he is the most unselfish, committed player I have ever seen. I'm just so proud of him and his leadership this year, it's just been fantastic."
Â
Looking ahead to conference play
"We've got to play to our strengths and we've got to fix out our blocking and defense a little bit. Those are the areas we've really got to work on. I try to let them play on their own a little bit. Try to give them some freedom. You know,
Rocco Lamuno is another one that comes in. Rocco's got some real feel for the game and stuff. It's going a little bit faster than he's used to. But Rocco gives us big minutes off the bench.
Jaden Emory coming in. We got some guys, they just need a little bit of experience. Now they're really going to have to earn it in practice because we know who our solid eight guys are.
