Softball takes 3-1 win over Albany State in 10 innings

ALBANY, Ga. (May 6, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers softball team took 3-1 extra-inning victory over the hosting Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams on Friday at the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship Tournament at the Gordon Sports Complex.

Spring Hill broke on the scoreboard first in the top of the 4th inning after Airyonna Weaver drove in Ashley Ortiz with a double to right-center. The Golden Rams (33-8) responded with a sacrifice fly to knot the game at 1-1 after 6 innings.

The game then became a pitchers' duel over the next several frames until the top of the 10th inning when SHC scored two runs off a single left by Ortiz that brought in pinch runner Abby Fridley and Weaver plated Ortiz again with a single to left.

After a 2-hour rain delay, SHC pitcher Paityn Desormeaux (9-3) closed out her win with two strikeouts and a line out to shortstop. Desormeaux went the full 10 innings with four hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts.

SHC hitters collected 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts as Ortiz and Weaver each had three hits.

The Badgers (26-15) will next play in the winner's bracket at the Gordon Sports Complex on Saturday morning versus the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers (27-11) at noon (east).
