Track & Field continues to improve at Montevallo
MONTEVALLO, Ala. (March 19, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women and men's Track & Field programs continued to show improvement by setting 20 personal bests at the Falcon Classic hosted by the University of Montevallo on Friday and Saturday.

"We had a great day Saturday,' said SHC head coach Craig McVey. "We had personal bests in every event discipline - sprints, middle-distance, distance, jumps, and throws."

John Abate placed 2nd the men's High Jump and McVey has been pleased with his progress "This was a great indication of where he can go," McVey said. "He's only 3/4" from his personal best."

Brian Pempel set his new personal best in the Javelin with a toss of 50.98 meters (167'3") for a 2nd place finish.

Jymece Grimsley also reached a new personal best (25.95) grabbing a 4th place finish in a loaded women's 200 meter dash. "She ran really well," McVey commented with a smile.

Mary Elizabeth Shelton had a great day, running 18:55.09 to place 4th in the women's 5,000 meter. "It's a new school record and the first time Spring Hill has had a women's distance runner go under 19:00," McVey said.

Claire Morgan ran her first collegiate 3,000-meter Steeplechase in 12:45.02 to place second with McVey adding, "Claire has done well in just getting started in the Steeplechase event. She's only going to improve as she learns the nuances of it."

"To have four people leading their respective events in the conference this early in the year is a tribute to each person's work ethic and competitiveness," said McVey, pointing out that Abate, Pempel, Shelton, and Morgan all currently lead the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) in their disciplines.
