Badgers close out Chillout with loss, win

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (February 12, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) Badgers softball team finished play at the 2022 Charger Chillout presented by Marshall County Tourism & Sports with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the 23rd-ranked host University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Chargers and an 11- 6 win over the Kentucky Wesleyan College Panthers at Sand Mountain Park on Friday afternoon.

Badger starter Olivia Indorf (1-3) surrendered an unearned run to the Chargers (6-1) in the bottom of the 2nd inning when two hits and two infield errors scored a runner with two outs.

Spring Hill answered back in the top of the 3rd inning with an RBI double down the left field line by shortstop Madison Koger to knot the game at 1-1. Sophomore 1st baseman Paityn Desormeaux then delivered a single to plate Koger and 3rd baseman Morgan Kramer came through with a double to right-center to bring in Desormeaux as SHC took a 3-1 lead.

Catcher Alaina Hampton of UAH poked a homer down the right field line in the bottom of the 3rd to slice it to a 3-2 Badger advantage. The Chargers later tied the game in the 4th frame off two singles and a two infield ground outs.

UAH ended the Badger's dreams of the upset with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th when a triple to right was followed by a walk-off single to left

Indorf took the hard-luck loss with 9 hits, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout while Megan Shurtz was the winner in 5.0 innings of relief work that included 4 hits, no walks, and 6 strikeouts.

Versus the Panthers (1-2), the Badgers took out their frustrations by pounding out to a 6-0 lead in the 1st inning before cruising to an 11-6 victory.

Alexandra Ballester (2-2) picked up the complete-game win allowing 12 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts. Macy Holt had 2 hits with a double, Hailey Schultz was 3-for-3 with a double and catcher Ashley Ortiz ripped a 2-run home run.

The Badgers (3-5) will host the University of Montevallo Falcons (3-3) in a 3-game series this weekend beginning with a single game at 2 p.m. on Friday followed by a doubleheader at noon on Saturday at Murray Field.
