Spring Hill men fall to Dragons, 72-69

JACKSON, Tenn. (January 15, 2022) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team suffered a 72-69 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) road loss to the Lane College Dragons at J.F. Lane Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Dragons (8-7; 4-3 SIAC West) held a slim 32-29 lead at halftime, but the Badgers took a 46-45 lead with 11 minutes left in the game. With 8 minutes on the clock SHC had taken a 61-55 edge, but the Dragons recovered from the Badger run to tie the game at the 1:25 mark off a 3-pointer by Maximillian Bell.

Timely rebounding and six consecutive free throws iced the win for Lane despite a trey from Sam Davidson of SHC that drew the Badgers to within 70-69 with 6 seconds showing.

SHC shot 44.4% (24-54) from the floor and made 55.6% (10-18) of its 3-point attempts, but struggled to a 64.7% (11-17) showing at the free throw line while losing 19 turnovers to 12 steals by the Dragons, resulting in 23 points off turnovers for the home team. Freshman Tana Kopa paced the Badgers with 21 points off the bench.

Lane was 41.3% (26-63) from the field including just 12.5% (2-16) from 3-point range and 75% (18-24) at the charity stripe. Lane lost nine turnovers to four Badger steals, but edged out a 36-35 win in rebounding under the boards. Four Dragons reached double-digits in scoring led by Justin Sylver's 20 points.

The Badgers (1-13, 0-7 SIAC West) will be back at home in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. to face the Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Wildcats (2-11; 2-4 SIAC West) in a make-up date of a conference contest postponed on December 16, 2021 due to Covid Protocols.
