Tigers Outshoot Badgers in DH Sweep

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team suffered a non-conference doubleheader sweep to the tune of 5-4 and 12-4 at the hands of the University of West Alabama (UWA) Tigers on Tuesday afternoon at the UWA Softball Complex.

The Tigers (17-19) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning of the opening contest off back-to-back, two-out doubles, but the Badgers answered with a 3-run 4th inning featuring a 2-run single to left by 1st baseman Paityn Desormeaux.

UWA sliced off a run by slapping a solo homer in the bottom of the 4th inning.

SHC added a sacrifice fly by center fielder Addison Grundmeyer in the 7th frame, but a successful 2nd and home double steal by the Tigers in the bottom half of the frame made it a 4-3 Badger lead. A single up the middle tied the game at 4-4. Then, with two-outs and the bases loaded, an infield error by SHC brought in the winning run for UWA.

Hannah Brenton (7-6) took the complete-game loss with seven hits and two walks allowed along with three strikeouts. Kaeleigh Crutchfield was the winner in 1.0 innings of relief, throwing just six pitches as SHC touched three UWA pitchers for 10 hits, no walks and only one strikeout.

UWA exploded out to an 11-0 lead in the 1st inning of Game 2 and SHC broke up the shutout with one out in the 4th when catcher Brooke Kelly singled in a run and 1st baseman Daniella Amador followed with a sacrifice fly to center. Third baseman Delaney Thomas would keep the game alive with a 2-run, 2-out single past the 2nd baseman in the 5th inning, but an RBI-single by Peyton Coots with two outs in the bottom of the 5th secured the 8-run Mercy Rule ending.

Olivia Indorf (7-4) took the loss in one-third of an inning pitched with six hits and a walk.  Crutchfield (5-1) earned the win in 3.0 innings with one hit, no walks and four strike outs.

The Badgers (14-12) will host the Kentucky State University (KSU) Thorobreds (0-10) in a doubleheader at Murray Field on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
