MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team used two solid pitching performances by their starters as well as timely hitting from their offense to sweep a doubleheader away from the Miles College Golden Bears by the scores of 3-0 and 5-1 at Murray Field on Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, SHC starter
Hannah Brenton (5-3) picked up her second shutout of 2021 by scattering four hits with no walks and a strikeout while coaxing the Bears (0-15) into seven fly-ball outs and 11 ground outs.
Spring Hill first broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3
rd inning when left fielder
Elise Caruso poked a grounder through the left side of the infield to bring in designated player
Morgan Kramer from 3
rd base. Center fielder
Sophia Nuzzolillo then made it a 2-0 game in the 4
th frame with a solid single to center that once again brought in a hustling Kramer from 2
nd base.
First baseman
Paityn Desormeaux tacked on some insurance in the 5
th inning with a single to center that plated pinch runner
Randa Day from 2
nd base. Day was in for catcher
Ashley Ortiz who got the rally started earlier with a single down the right field line with two outs.
Kramer, Nuzzolillo and 3
rd baseman
Delaney Thomas each collected two hits in the first contest as Miles starter Zamiyah Williams (0-8) took the loss in 3.2 innings with five hits, three walks and no strikeouts.
For the second game, freshman
Olivia Indorf (6-2) went the distance giving up just four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Magen Rich (0-1) of Miles took the loss in her first start of the year lasting 3.0 innings with two hits and a walk while striking out no batters.
Miles appeared to take an early 1-0 lead in the 1
st inning when with runners on 2
nd and 3
rd bases with one out, 3
rd baseman Aryelle Jones ripped a line drive into center that was caught for an apparent sacrifice fly, but the runner touching home from 3
rd was called out upon appeal for having left the base early, ending the inning.
SHC used a run-scoring single past the shortstop by Ortiz and wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead in the 3
rd inning. First baseman
Daniella Amador put a run across in the 4
th stanza with an unselfish RBI-ground out to second. Two more Badgers crossed the plate in the 5
th inning when Thomas repeated Amador's effort with a run-scoring ground out to 2
nd and an infield error with two outs brought in center fielder
Kaycie Saxton.
The Badgers (11-7) close out this 4-game series with the Golden Bears in a doubleheader at Murray Field beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
