Maroon Tigers claw past Badger men, 86-70

MOBILE, Ala. (December 13, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team suffered an 86-70 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) loss to the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Monday night.

The Maroon Tigers (4-6, 2-2 SIAC East) held a slim 45-43 lead at halftime, but used a 12-point run early in the second period to build out a healthy advantage. The bulge would grow to as much as 17 points with 6:21 remaining.

Steven Lyles led SHC with 18 points and six rebounds with David Daniels and Tana Kopa adding 10 points apiece. Jaden Gray contributed 11 points off the bench. The Badgers hurt themselves with 23 turnovers against 14 Tiger steals, resulting in 38 points-off-turnovers for the visitors from Atlanta. SHC shot 49.1% (26-53) from the floor and 27.3% from 3-point range.

Morehouse was paced by Andrew Stewart with 21 points and five rebounds, Ibn Williams with 15, and Elijah Stewart with 11 points. Morehouse lost 21 turnovers to nine SHC steals, but the Badgers only cashed them in for 14 points on the other end. The Tigers out-rebounded the Badgers 33-26, leading to a 21-8 advantage in second chance points. Morehouse's bench bettered the Badger reserves by a 51-22 margin.

The Tigers shot 50.8% (30-59) from the field and 30% (6-20) from 3-point land while also draining 90% (18-20) of their free throws. SHC was 63.2% (12-19) from the charity stripe.

The Badgers (1-8, 0-3 SIAC West) will next visit the Wildcats (1-7; 1-2 SIAC East) of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (east).
