WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team lost an 86-79 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) decision to the Central State University (CSU) Marauders on Saturday afternoon at Beacom/Lewis Gym.
The Marauders (11-10, 8-6 SIAC West) held a 50-34 advantage at halftime, but the Badgers fought back to within five points at 82-77 with 47 seconds to play in the game. Two CSU free throws were answered by a layup from senior guard
Dwight Harris, but a final dunk by Darweshi Hunter with 17 seconds left sealed the victory of the Marauders.
Senior forward
Chase Shellman of Louisville, Ky. scored 24 points with 17 rebounds for the Badgers while Harris added 23 points with 13 rebounds. Junior guard
Ron Rice contributed 17 points off the bench.
As a team, SHC shot 42.9% (30-70) from the field, but just 19% (4-21) from 3-point range. The Badgers lost 15 turnovers against 10 steals by the Marauders that translated into a 19-4 advantage for CSU in points off turnovers. Conversely, SHC took a 53-44 victory in rebounding for a 22-18 advantage in second chance scoring. The Badgers made 75% (15-20) of their free throws.
Hunter and Dreon Lewis paced CSU with 20 points each and Harris Brown poured in another 19 points for the Marauders. CSU shot 38% (30-79) overall and made 36.7% (11-30) of their shots from beyond the arc. The Marauders committed just five turnovers against three steals by the Badgers. CSU sank 71.4% (15-21) of their free throw opportunities on the night.
The Badgers (6-17, 5-9 SIAC West) next play on Monday night at the Kentucky State University (KSU) Thorobreds (8-13, 5-9 SIAC West) at 7:30 p.m. (east) in the William Exum Center in Frankfort, Ky.
