Badger women edged 72-67 at Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team took a 72-67 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) road loss at the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the Daniel "Chappie" James Center.
 
In a game postponed by weather on Saturday, the Golden Tigers (8-8, 4-3 SIAC West) and the Badgers were knotted at 35-35 coming back to the court after halftime, but Tuskegee grabbed a 55-49 lead after the 3rd quarter of play. SHC would cut the lead to two points twice in the 4th period, but missed shots on three crucial trips down the court from the 5-minute to the 4-minute marks that the Tigers turned into rebounds and layups for a 69-61 lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
 
Four of the five Badger starters scored in double-digits led by senior forward Tiffany Valentine of Houston, Texas with 17 points while junior forward Katie Krout of Tuscaloosa poured in 12 and senior shooting guard Elise Reilly of Covington, La. along with point guard freshman Lindi DeBilzan of Lexington, Ky. each added 11 points. Krout also hauled down a team-high 12 rebounds.
 
As a team, the Badgers shot 40.9% (27-66) overall in the game, including 15% (3-20) from beyond 3-point distance. SHC turned the ball over 21 times versus against 13 steals by the Tiger defense. The Badgers hit on 61.5% (16-26) of their free throw opportunities.
 
Three Tigers reached double-digits in points scored paced by Lena Yoonis with 13 points as Tuskegee shot 37% (27-73) from the field and 13.3% (2-15) from 3-point range. Tuskegee scored on 61.5% (16-26) of its free throws. The Tigers also lost 13 turnovers to 7 Badger steals. Benedict controlled the boards with a 51-44 advantage in rebounding.
 
The Badgers (4-10, 3-3 SIAC West) will visit non-conference and historic Jesuit rival the Loyola University Wolf Pack (11-3) on noon Tuesday in The Den in New Orleans, La.
