MOBILE, Ala. - Spring Hill College allowed only one hit through 10 innings, as the Badgers put together a pair of 11-0 wins Tuesday afternoon to sweep LeMoyne-Owen College on Day 1 of a SIAC series.
Hannah Brenton and
Julia Waters pitched a combined no-hitter in Game 1, while Baylie Dorion and Waters combined for a one-hit, one-walk shutout in the second game.
The series, originally scheduled as a LeMoyne-Owen home series in Memphis, Tennessee, was moved to Mobile due to weather. Spring Hill was the visiting team in both games.
The wins move Spring Hill to 21-18 overall and extends its lead in the SIAC West at 13-2. Game three of the series will be played Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.
GAME 1: Spring Hill 11, LeMoyne-Owen 0
Brenton, who was named the SIAC Pitcher of the Week each of the last two weeks, struck out seven through three innings for the Game 1 win. Waters pitched the final two frames. The only defensive blemish coming on a fielding error with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. She struck out two.
The Badgers, playing as the visiting team in the series jumped on top 7-0 to start the game. Caruso's two-out, three-run double capped the first inning scoring. The Badgers added one run in the top of the third to build an eight-run lead, and added three insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning to enact the 8-run rule.
GAME 2: Spring Hill 11, LeMoyne-Owen 0
Led by three RBI from
Cassidy Mehr and two by
Daniella Amador, Spring Hill scattered its runs across four innings in Game 2. The Badgers scored two runs in each of the first three innings and put up five runs in the fourth.
Amador doubled twice in the game, while Fillmore and Mehr each had one double. Thomas hit a two-out home run to spark the Badgers' five-run fourth inning.
Dorion struck out seven and did not allow a base runner to win the second game in the circle. Waters once again worked the final two innings, striking out four and allowing one hit in the fourth inning.
Fillmore and Amador each had two hits. Carmern Byrd and Carolyn Hart each had one hit, along with Thomas and Mehr.
