Sandy Badgers Drop Both Matches on Final Day
BATON ROUGE, La. - Spring Hill College finished play at the Battle on the Bayou Tournament Saturday, suffering a pair of losses to Division I members New Orleans (4-1) and LSU (5-0).
Spring Hill (14-10) and New Orleans (12-10) had split its previous two meetings this season and Saturday's match was close as well, with two matches going to a third set before the Privateers were able to pull out the win.
The Sandy Badgers got their win from Taylor Hurst and Cassidi Sterrett, who beat Ehize Omoghibo and Alexa Spartz, 21-19, 21-17 at No. 4. However, New Orleans got victories in the other four matches to walk away with the win. At No. 1, Veronica Corcoran and Rachel Kuhn held off Payton Gidney and Kassandra Fairly, 21-15, 15-21, 15-13, Blessing Dunn and Brianna Vega beat Allison Weimer and Caroline Herrera, 21-18, 21-12 at No. 2, Victoria Corcoran and Ally Carr knocked off Brittany Bilotti and Sarah Senft, 21-14, 21-19 in the No. 3 match and Madison Miller and Rhyan Rand edged out Emily Sullivan and Emmarose Neibert, 21-17, 15-21, 15-6 at No. 5 for the Privateers.
In the match against No. 4 LSU (25-5), Spring Hill was swept in the five scoring matches, but the duo of Leanne Sorrel and Sullivan did earn a 21-14, 18-21, 15-12 win over Caitlin Broadwell and Jeni Clark in the exhibition match.
In the scoring matches, LSU's Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss beat Gidney and Fairly, 21-13, 21-12 at No. 1, Olivia Powers and Ashley Allmer won 21-13, 21-9 over Weimer and Herrera at No. 2, Toni Rodriguez and Maddie Ligon knocked off Bilotti and Senft, 21-12, 21-10 at No. 3, Taryn Kloth and Megan Davenport won, 21-10, 21-11 over Hurst and Sterrett in the No. 4 match and Olivia Beyer and Hunter Domanski finished the sweep with a 21-12, 21-13 victory over Greim and Neibert at No. 5.
With their regular season concluded, the Sandy Badgers now turn their attention to the AVCA Small College Beach Championship, scheduled for April 19-21 at Hickory Point Beach in Tavares, Fla.
