WARNER ROBINS, Ga. – The Spring Hill College women's tennis team knocked off Benedict College for the first time ever to open play in the SIAC Tennis Round-Up.
Benedict looked to be in control following a dominant performance in doubles play. Benedict's Olivia Simms and Gabriela Zeyala beat Spring Hill's
Rebecca Pearlman and
Mary Roane 6-1 while Beverly Matsine and Karina Izacova knocked off
Jamie Martin and
Mary Grace Sullivan 6-3.
However, due to a pair of forfeit matches in singles play, Spring Hill took a 2-1 lead prior to the start of singles play.
The Tigers knotted the score early in singles play behind a 6-1, 6-0 win from Izakova over Sullivan, but the Badgers vaulted back into the lead behind a 6-1, 6-2 win from Pearlman over Simms.
Benedict again tied the score of the match after a dramatic 2-6, 6-7, 15-13 win from Matsine over Martin.
The match came down to the contest between Spring Hill's
Macinley Chastain and Benedict's Zeyala. When the dust settled, Chastain had prevailed in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to hand her squad the match victory.
The team was in competition against Tuskegee when the match was suspended. The squads will resume play tomorrow.
