Spring Hill opens SIAC play 2-0
JASPER, Ala. - Spring Hill College opened Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action Friday with a Day 1 sweep in the SIAC Crossover at Memorial Park. 
The Badgers defeated Clark Atlanta University, 13-4, and then Fort Valley State University, 12-4, to open SIAC play with a 2-0 record. 
Caroline Hart and Carmen Byrd both had two hits in each game to lead the Badgers with a four-hit day. Delaney Thomas and Elise Caruso, who each had three hits against Clark, also finished with four hits on the day. 
GAME 1 - Spring Hill 13, Clark Atlanta 4
The Badgers erased a 3-1 deficit with a five-run second inning to break the game open. Spring Hill went on to scored three in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the seventh while piling up 13 hits, six hits and taking advantage of six errors by Clark Atlanta. 
Delaney Thomas (3-for-3) and Elise Caruso (3-for-4) led Spring Hill with three hits apiece. Thomas also drew two walks to help drive in three runs and score three times. Hannah Fillmore was 2-for-4 in the game with four RBI and two runs scored ,while Aly Fowler (1-for-5) also drove in three runs. Caroline Hart and Carmen Byrd each had two hits. 
Gray Still led Clark Atlanta with two hits. 
Hannah Brenton collected the win, allowing four runs (three earned) through six innings. She allowed six hits, two walks and struck out seven. 
Byrd doubled to start the game and scored on a single by Thomas in the top of the first. Three of Clark's hits came in the bottom half of the inning to push across three runs. 
Hart got the five-run second inning going with a single before two errors loaded the bases. After pushing across one run on a ground out by Kaycie Saxton, Spring Hill scored two on a two-out single by Thomas and two more on an error. 
Six of the Badgers' runs were unearned. 
GAME 2 - Spring Hill 12, Fort Valley State 4 
Fort Valley State University and Spring Hill College each scored three runs in the second inning. After FVSU took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third, the Badgers answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning and added two in the fifth and five in the sixth to enact the run rule, 12-4, after six innings. 
After Fort Valley's three-run top of the second, Morgan Kramer put Spring hill on the board with an RBI single to right, followed by a two-run triple by Byrd to tie the game. 
Jenelle Cockerham drove in a run to put the Wildcats in front, but a two-run single by Hart in the fifth inning proved to be the game-winning hit. Saxton also singled in a pair in the fifth. 
Fillmore, Cassidy Mehr, Kramer and Daniella Amador drove in one run each in the sixth with Amador's fielder's choice enacting the 8-run rule. Mehr and Sacton also had two hits in the game.
Baylie Dorion recorded the win, allowing one hit through three shut out innings in relief. She struck out four. Olivia Brown pitched only three innings as the starter, allowing four runs, two earned, off six hits and a walk. She had three Ks. 
NEXT: Spring Hill (8-11, 2-0 SIAC) returns to action Saturday in the SIAC Crossover, meeting Paine College at 12:15 p.m.
