MOBILE, Ala. - Spring Hill College got back on the winning track Wednesday, edging past Dallas Baptist, 4-3, in a non-conference match at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
The Badgers (5-6) earned the doubles point by getting a 6-4 win from
Cedric Nitz and
Kurt Shiell over the Patriots' Grant McKenzie and Riley Smith at the No. 1 slot and a 6-3 victory from
Ulf Grosseloh and
Ricardo Pena over Andrew Hallowell and Brian Nguyen at No. 3. Dallas Baptist won the No. 2 match, as Gabe Garrido and Josh Williams got past Tim Behrendt and Alex Demel, 6-1.
Dallas Baptist evened the match at 1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win by Garrido over Pena at No. 3 singles, but Shiell put the Badgers back in front with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jacob Harris at No. 6.
The Patriots re-tied the match, 2-2, when Smith beat
Chris Mines, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5, but Spring Hill pulled ahead again after Demel got past Williams, 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 4 singles match. McKenzie gave Dallas Baptist a third point with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Grosseloh at No. 2, but Nitz pulled out the win for the Badgers by beating Nguyen, 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match.
Spring Hill is back on the court Saturday, traveling to New Orleans, La., to take on Our Lady of the Lake. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
