Badgers fall to CAU Panthers, 86-68

The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team suffered an 86-68 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to the Clark Atlanta University (CAU) Panthers at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Monday night.
 
The Panthers (2-9, 2-1 SIAC East) were clinging to a 37-36 lead at halftime, but outscored the Badgers 49-32 in the 2nd half to earn to win.
 
Four Badgers reached double-digits as sophomore guard Christian Brandt of Auburn, Ala. poured in 20 points off 7-of-11 shooting including a 6-of-9 night from 3-point range. Senior guard Gresyn Rogers of Casa Grande, Ariz. collected 16 points while senior forward Chase Shellman of Louisville, Ky. had 12 and sophomore forward Brent Smith of St. Louis, Mo. added 11 points. Shellman also hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
 
SHC shot 36.9% (24-65) from the field and 42.9% (9-21) from 3-point range. The Badgers committed 12 turnovers against seven steals by the Panthers while edging out a 43-42 edge in rebounding for a 20-17 advantage in second chance points. Spring Hill made just 64.7% (11-17) of their free throw attempts.
 
The Panthers had two players score 21 points as Tyler Singleton was 8-of-15 from the floor and Romaine Thomas was 6-of-11 with nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals. CAU shot 40% (26-65) overall and 31.8% (7-22) from 3-point distance while losing just six turnovers to three steals by the Badgers. The Panthers would drain 84.4% (27-32) of their free throw opportunities and earn a 19-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
The Badgers (1-9, 0-3 SIAC West) next travel to SIAC newcomer the Savannah State University (SSU) Tigers (1-5, 1-2 SIAC East) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (Eastern) in Tiger Arena.
