MOBILE, Ala. –
Tiffany Valentine and
Katie Krout each posted double-doubles to pace Spring Hill College to its second-straight Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) women's basketball victory, beating Fort Valley State University, 76-52, on Jan. 7 in the Arthur Outlaw Recreation Center.
The win pulled Spring Hill even on the season at 7-7 and pushed the Badgers into third place in the SIAC West at 3-2.
Valentine scored 27 and added 10 rebounds for her 12
th career double-double, while Krout had 12 points and a career-high 15 boards for her second career double-double, coming in back-to-back games.
Mathilde Nicholas hit a 3 with 5:49 to play in the first quarter, giving Spring Hill its first lead, 7-6, and the Badgers never let up. The basket came early in a 17-2 Badgers' run to close the first quarter with a 19-8 lead after another Nicholas 3 and one from
Kate Hammond. Spring Hill maintained its lead through the next 10 minutes to enter the half up, 32-21.
Valentine and Krout paced the Badgers in the second half, combining for 26 of Spring Hill's 44 points. A
Daja Walker layup with 3:36 to play gave the Badgers their first 20-point lead of the night, 46-25. The lead grew as high as 23 points three times in the third quarter – the largest of the night until a
Stephanie Gregory free throw in the final minute capped the 24-point victory to match Spring Hill's largest win margin of the season.
Walker finished with 11 points for the Badgers and
Carrington Matias led all players with a career-high 7 assists.
Fort Valley State was led by Nola Carter's 16 points and nine from Alicia Franklin.
Spring Hill College will continue its home stand on Monday, Jan. 14 when it hosts LeMoyne-Owen College at 5:30 p.m.
