SHC Falls Short to Albany State in Overtime

MOBILE, Ala. – Spring Hill College men's basketball simply ran out of time Saturday afternoon, falling 76-74 in overtime to Albany State University in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Arthur Outlaw Recreation Center.

After ASU took the lead with 31 seconds to play, the Badgers worked the clock down but missed a jumper with five seconds to play. David Daniels blocked a fast-break attempt by Randy McClure and Mario Young missed an offensive put-back for the Golden Rams. Ryan Littel grabbed the board but time expired before a final shot attempt.

Spring Hill was 3-of-5 on free throw attempts in overtime and 1-of-2 from the floor. ASU had four offensive rebounds to help extend its overtime opportunities and 19 total in the game.

Trailing 69-64 with 1:01 to play in regulation, Andrew Dotson hit a jumper and then followed with a 3-pointer off a turnover to tie the game, 69-69. Juwan High missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer for ASU to send the game into overtime. Dotson, the only Badger to score a field goal in OT, led Spring Hill with 23 points.

The Badgers opened the game with an 8-0 run with the help of five Brandon Fischer points and a Christian Brandt 3-pointer. Jonathan Henderson worked the game even, 8-8. It wasn't until 10:23 that ASU took the lead, 17-15, on a jumper by Jarred Harrington, but Brandt answered with a  3 to regain the lead. ASU quickly regained the lead and grew it to seven points before Spring Hill pushed back to even the score at 25. The Golden Rams kept the lead and entered halftime with a 34-32 lead after Quinn Sutton scored five of seven Badger points to close the half.

ASU used a 23-7 run to take an 18-point lead, 57-39, in the second half.  Spring Hill charged back with a 15-point run to cut it to three points, 57-54, on a Jeffery Pharr dunk with 5:29 to play. Dotson scored seven of the 15. The final five minutes of regulation was back-and-forth until Spring Hill's push in the final minute to force overtime.

The Badgers shot 52 percent (26-of-50) in the game and sank 80 percent of its free throws (12-of-15).

Daniels finished with 11 points behind Dotson's leading 23, while Fischer and Pharr each scored nine. Pharr led the Badgers with 10 rebounds.

Four ASU players scored in double digits. Harrington led the way with 17 points, followed by 16 from Randy McClure and 12 apiece from Tyrell Williams and Young, who added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Spring Hill (5-9, 1-4 SIAC) will remain home in the Outlaw Recreation Center to host Fort Valley State University on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
