Krout's Career-Highs Pace Badgers in OT Win at Miles

FAIRFIELD, Ala. – Spring Hill College women's basketball posted won its second overtime game of the season Monday night, defeating Miles College on the road, 71-68.

With Katie Krout scoring a career-high 22 points and grabbing a career-best 15 rebounds, the Badgers trailed only once in 45 minutes of action. After building a nine-point lead in the first half, Spring Hill maintained a 25-22 lead at halftime and grew that lead as high as 12 points, 56-44, with 6:33 to play.

Miles College built a 15-2 run in nearly five minutes of action to push in front, 59-58, with 1:56 to play on a Mya Millner jumper. Najla Shamsid-Deen scored seven of her 12 total points during the run. After Tiffany Valentine tied it, Krout grabbed a defensive rebound and scored off a Stephanie Gregory assist to put Spring Hill up, 61-59 with 54 seconds to play. Taylor Terry answered for Miles to tie the game once more. Terry led the Golden Bears with a double-double 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Valentine went back to the free throw line with 25 seconds left, hitting 1-of-2 to regain Badgers' lead, but Spring Hill ended up fouling Jasmine Hollis on an offensive rebound with five seconds to play. Hollis hit the first to tie it, but missed the second. Krout grabbed the board and Mathilde Nicholas missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Hollis finished the game with 10 rebounds.

Each time Spring Hill took the lead in overtime, Miles answered until Daja Walker scored an offensive put back with 17 seconds left.  She missed the and-one free throw, but returned to the line with two seconds left to hit 1-of-2 for the final three-point margin. Miles College missed two 3-pointers in the final eight seconds.

Valentine and Walker followed Krout's lead with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Spring Hill (9-10, 5-5 SIAC) will return home to Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Thursday, Jan. 31 to host Lane College at 5:30 p.m. – the first of a four-game homestand. This week's action also includes a live broadcast on ESPN3 this Saturday, Feb. 2 against Central State University.
