FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team lost a 75-73 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division decision to the Kentucky State University (KSU) Thorobreds on Saturday afternoon at the Exum Center.
Leading 36-29 at halftime, the Badgers saw the Thorobreds claw back to take a 59-58 lead with 7:44 left on the clock and build out as much as a 69-62 advantage with 4:33 remaining.
With just 48 seconds showing on the clock
Chase Shellman of SHC knocked down a jumper to pull the Badgers to within 73-71, but two free throws by Ray Croon of KSU with 3 seconds showing sealed the victory for the Thorobreds.
Shellman collected 22 points to lead the Badgers while
Gresyn Rogers added another 21 points to the SHC scoresheet.
William Loyd tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as SHC shot 45.8% (27-59) from the field and 42.9% (6-14) from 3-point range. The Badgers suffered 11 turnovers against seven steals by the Thorobreds, but controlled the boards by a 40-38 margin in rebounding. At the free throw line, SHC made just 59.1 (13-22) of their foul shots.
Ditalion Battle of the Thorobreds (7-15, 6-9 SIAC West) had 23 points as KSU shot 43.8% (28-64) from the floor and 31.8% (7-22) from 3-point distance while losing 11 turnovers to seven Badger steals. The Thorobreds knocked down 63.2% (12-19) of their free throw opportunities.
The Badgers (9-14, 6-8 SIAC West) next travel to Wilberforce, Ohio, to take on the Central State University (CSU) Marauders (7-14, 6-8 SIAC West) beginning at 5:30 p.m. (East) at Beacom/Lewis Gym.
