ALBANY, Ga. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team snapped a 10-game losing skid with a 76-67 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) interdivisional road victory over the Albany State University (ASU) Golden Rams on Thursday night at the West Campus Arena.
The Badgers and Rams traded the lead for the first five minutes of the game, but Albany State stretched out to a 20-14 lead with 11:43 to go until halftime.
Jack Morrissey of SHC drained a 3-pointer at 11:28 to drag the Badgers to within 20-17. Down 22-19 with 10 minutes until the intermission, the Badgers then erupted for an 18-8 run led by senior
Walter Massey and carried a 37-30 bulge into halftime.
Gresyn Rogers knocked down a 3-pointer at 16:35 as SHC expanded their lead to 44-33, but ASU rallied to slim their deficit to just 51-47 at 11:33. The Badgers responded to the challenge by rebuilding a 60-48 margin at 8:52 capped by a
William Loyd layup. At 6:45, SHC maintained a 66-51 advantage and pulled away to a 74-54 cushion with 4:05 left on the clock.
Brandon Fischer led the Badgers with 18 points and eight rebounds while Rogers added 17 points and Massey dropped in 10 points. Overall, SHC shot a healthy 54% (27-50) from the field and 42.9% (6-14) from 3-point range. The Badgers suffered 17 turnovers against nine steals by ASU. At the charity stripe, SHC made 88.9% (16-18) of their free throw attempts.
Rahdin Hughes paced the Golden Rams (1-14, 1-6 SIAC East) with 13 points as four Rams reached double-digits in scoring. ASU shot 41.8% (23-55) from the floor and 31.6% (6-19) from 3-point distance while losing 10 turnovers to five Badger steals. The Golden Rams lost the rebounding war 34-27 and shot just 60% (15-25) from the free throw line.
The Badgers (3-11, 1-5 SIAC West) will play the second game of this four-game, two-week road trip in Fort Valley, Ga., when they take on the Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Wildcats (9-6, 6-1 SIAC East) beginning at 3 p.m. (eastern) in the HPE Basketball Arena.
