Badger softball fends off Choctaws, 2-0 & 8-6
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLINTON, Miss. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) softball team swept a non-conference double header away from the Mississippi College (MC) Choctaws by the scores of 2-0 and 8-6 at the MC Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

The Badgers built out a 2-0 lead over the Choctaws (25-16) in the 2nd inning of the first game when second baseman Rene Kausin doubled down the left field line to plate first baseman Madeline Burchell and left fielder Savannah Woodruff

Sophomore starter Danielle Clark (20-9) made the pair of early runs stand up in route to her ninth shutout of the season by scattering seven hits with two walks and three strike outs. Kausin and Woodruff provided the Badgers with two hits apiece in the opener.

Jordan Holifield (4-2) took the compete-game loss surrendering eight hits with no walks and three strike outs. Choctaw first baseman Tylan Buckley and third Mackenzie Nieto both earned two hits for the home team.

The nightcap also saw SHC jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning when second baseman Bayleigh Anders brought in shortstop Carmen Byrd with a run from 3rd base off a grounder to 2nd base that suddenly resulted in another run scampering home from 2nd in the person of catcher Kali Clement when the throw sailed wide at 1st base.

MC cut the lead to 2-1 in the 2nd inning with a two-out double to left-center by second baseman Lauren Mulligan that brought in third baseman Kristen Qualls, but the Badgers would erupt for six runs in the 5th inning. Designated hitter Mary Glass singled to left field for a run and another MC error resulted in a second run reaching the plate. Burchell followed up that series with her second Gram Slam of the year to stake SHC to an 8-1 lead.

Three Badger errors and an MC homer led to four runs for the Choctaws in the 6th inning as the SHC advantage shrank to 8-5 with one inning left in the game. In the bottom of the 7th, two hit batter brought the tying run to the plate with one out. A strike out and an RBI-ground out to 2nd base made it 8-6 with a runner at 3rd base. A walk would put the tying run at 1st base for the Choctaws, but a ground out to shortstop would end the threat.

Freshman Bayleigh Doiron (6-2) continued her impressive rookie campaign with the win in 5.1 innings with eight hits, two walks and four strike outs while Clark earned her first save of the year with 1.2 innings of work, no hits, a walk and a strike out. Center fielder Jenna Charnock collected two hits for the Badgers as did Glass.

Adrianna Morgan (4-5) took the loss in four innings with seven hits, two walks and a strike out while Buckley added three more hits to her totals on the day.

Spring Hill (32-15) will close out the 2017 season at home on Friday afternoon at Murray Field with a double header versus non-conference opponent the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks (20-16).
